Overview
Architect Level I – Virginia Beach, VA
A growing, purpose-driven architecture and interior design firm in Virginia Beach, VA is seeking a licensed or near-licensed Architect Level I who is ready to own their production work, lead project scopes, and contribute to a small, highly capable studio where your technical standard defines the quality of what gets built.
This is not a role where you direct others and review their output—you are the output. You will work directly in Revit and AutoCAD, produce drawings, write specifications, and carry projects through construction administration with confidence and professional accountability. If that describes how you work and how you want to work, this opportunity may be a strong fit.
Important: This Might Not Be a Fit For You If…
You are more than two ARE divisions away from licensure and have not completed your AXP hours. This role is intended for licensed professionals or those nearing licensure.
You expect a draftsperson or junior staff member to execute your drawings. You are responsible for producing all deliverables.
You require significant oversight to apply building codes, coordinate with consultants, or navigate permitting processes.
You have fewer than three years of professional experience producing coordinated construction document sets in a licensed architectural practice.
You prefer large corporate environments with extensive support structures. This is a focused, 12-person studio where self-sufficiency is expected.
This Role Is Ideal If You…
Are a licensed architect or one to two ARE divisions away from licensure, with 3–5 years of production experience.
Can independently develop complete drawing sets, write specifications, respond to plan review comments, and conduct site observations.
Take ownership of your work and function as the technical backbone of a project.
Want your contributions to be visible and impactful within a small firm environment.
Are looking to grow into Project Manager and Senior Architect roles.
What You’ll Do
Independently prepare and lead construction document sets for projects of moderate size and complexity.
Perform design and planning analyses across sectors including multifamily, mixed-use, commercial, healthcare, industrial, and education.
Write specifications under CSI MasterFormat within the AIA contract framework.
Coordinate with engineering consultants and manage permitting submittals.
Lead construction administration activities including RFIs, submittals, and field observations.
Attend client meetings as a technical contributor.
Collaborate closely with senior leadership and team members, contributing to a high standard of project delivery.
What We’re Looking For
Licensed Architect or near-licensed (AXP complete with 1–2 ARE exams remaining).
3–5 years of experience in a licensed architectural practice.
Demonstrated ability to independently produce complete construction document sets.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, working knowledge of Revit/BIM, and experience with Bluebeam.
Strong understanding of building codes including IBC, ADA, ANSI A117.1, and life safety requirements.
Experience with permitting processes and jurisdictional coordination.
Clear and professional communication skills.
Highly organized, self-directed, and capable of managing multiple responsibilities.
Work Environment
You will report to firm leadership and collaborate with experienced Senior Architects and a Project Manager in a highly engaged, team-oriented environment. In a firm of this size, your work is visible and your contributions directly influence project outcomes and overall quality.
