Job Description

Installs, maintains, and operates all traffic signals, school flashers, safety beacons and street lighting within the City of Laredo.

Essential Functions/ Job Competencies/ Physical Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of electrical principles, wiring, troubleshooting, and applications. Ability to read and understand blue prints and manufacturer specifications.Ability to prepare analytical and informational reports and make presentations. Ability to interpret comprehensive federal and state regulations that will ensure effective practices and quality results. Ability to calculate material requirements.Ability to use power tools and perform strenuous work.Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record. Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees and respond to general public complaints.Ability to project a positive and professional image of the City of Laredo.Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.Required to comply with all City of Laredo’s policies and procedures. Physical Requirements And Work Environment

Work is performed outside an office, stockroom, or warehouse and exposed to a variety of weather conditions and to outdoor elements, such as: dust, fumes, smoke, gases, dirt, solvents, grease, oils, silica, asbestos, constant noise, vibration, radiant/electrical energy, and slippery/uneven walking surfaces. Work consists of possible exposure to contagious infectious disease/irritating chemicals, excessive dampness, chill, heat, humidity, cold/inclement weather, excessive noise, unknown & dangerous conditions, unusual environmental stress, life-threatening situations, and dry atmosphere. Work involves rotating shifts and working extended workdays outside the regular working hours, around machines with moving parts, objects or vehicles, with protective devices, on ladders or scaffoldings, and with hands in water; Capable of working closely with others or alone. Work requires straight pulling, simple grasping, pulling hand over head, dual simultaneous grasping, repeated bending, standing, sitting, crouching, crawling, twisting, kneeling, stooping, pushing, reaching above shoulders, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, and light to heavy lifting and carrying between 15 to 45 pounds and over. Ability to see, write, count, read, identify shade of colors, depth perception, operate office and mechanical equipment, operate motor vehicle and hearing is needed to perform essential functions.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities

Responds to trouble calls, trouble shoot overhead cables, underground cables, lights, detectors, mast arms, communication connections to determine the cause of traffic signal malfunctions and make subsequent repairs, under direct supervision. Sets-up/operates hydraulic-aerial bucket truck or other city vehicles.Repairs and maintains traffic signal equipment, signal heads, detectors, preventive maintenance, etc. Splices electrical wiring i.e., strip insulation, twist wires together, solders, tapes, applies terminal caps, etc. Reads profiles and blue prints. Installs traffic signal equipment, signal heads, loops, safety monitors, loads switches, relays, etc. Assists in programming and maintaining school flashers and speed radar units. Installs and repairs video and equipment connections, cables, wirings, and other related equipment.Operates/checks/cleans/services various tools: power saws, concrete cutters, radial arms, skills, etc. Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors and other business contacts. Must follow all rules of telephone courtesy in all telephone communications. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.

-AND-

Two (2) years of experience in electrical services or traffic signal related experience.

Valid Licenses and Certifications

Valid Texas Drivers License*

If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.

As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
