About the position
Travelers is seeking a Lead Architect to join our Claim Architecture organization as we reimagine and transform our Claim ecosystem. This is a rare opportunity to help build an enterprise-scale platform from the ground up. In this role, you will work closely with multiple Value Streams to deliver our new AI-native platform through a scaled agile delivery model. You will establish strategic architecture for future capabilities, conduct proof-of-concepts (POCs), define patterns and guidelines to shape our future Platform Architecture, and support the platform build execution. The ideal candidate orchestrates the technical strategy that empowers engineering teams — defining target states, creating technology roadmaps and establishing architectural frameworks that accelerate innovation while maintaining standards and governance. As the essential bridge between business strategy and technical implementation, this role directly shapes organizational agility, system integration and our ability to rapidly adapt and scale technology solutions across the business landscape. The right candidate brings demonstrated architecture experience leading major transformations, collaborates effectively with cross-functional teams and influences key decisions. This person is comfortable conducting hands-on POCs, leveraging established and emerging AI tools and frameworks, and effectively communicating complex technical concepts to executive stakeholders.

Define architecture to enable business capabilitiesDefine and prototype technology proof of concepts to validate architectural solutionsDrive continuous technology transformation to minimize technical debtPartner with Technology and Business leadership to ensure proper alignment with technology direction and execution of proof of technologiesDefine and lead technology proof of concepts to ensure feasibility of architecture solutionsProactively identify opportunities to capitalize on technology advances through analysis of key industry and technology trends to assess potential impact on the enterpriseConduct hands-on prototyping of new technology solutionsPartner with Technology and Business leadership to ensure proper alignment with technology direction and execution of proof of technologiesProvide strong thought leadership in pursuit of modern architecture principles and technology modernizationEngage with the senior leadership within Technology and Business to develop architecture priorities and direction to enable business imperatives and gain buy-inPrepare and deliver communications to convey architectural directionRequirements
Bachelor's degree in a technology-related field or equivalent, with 8 to 10 years of architecture experienceSuccessful execution of complex, large-scale technology strategiesAdvanced-level architecture experience implementing large-scale custom/homegrown platforms, including recent experience implementing AI solutionsProven experience with the established architectural patterns including microservices, event-driven architecture, API design , and familiarity with emerging Agentic Architecture patternsSuccessful execution of complex, large scale technology strategiesAdvanced leadership skills with the ability to leverage cross-functional networks to collaborate with architecture and engineering leaders on problem-solving, build company-wide credibility, prioritize critical architectural challenges, and strengthen the Architecture organization through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and creating development opportunities for team membersExtensive experience working in an agile operational modelAdvanced experience supporting transformational changeAble to adjust plans, priorities and strategies in response to changing circumstancesExperience developing technology target states and roadmaps that align to short- and long-term business goalsStrong understanding of value creation and business capability modelsStrong knowledge of the insurance industryAdvanced experience identifying and analyzing current/future problems and opportunities, evaluating information to understand root causes, and exploring alternative solutions for effective decision-makingProven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve mutually responsible resultsExtensive experience exercising sound judgment, making decisions and committing to a positionAdvanced and effective verbal, written and listening communication skillsBachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience7 additional years of architecture/software engineering experience2 years of technical leadership experienceNice-to-haves
