Studio Internship – Summer (2026)

Woodhull Portland, Maine

Summer Internship - Studio (2026)
Portland, Maine
Woodhull is a premier design-build practice recognized for refined architecture, exceptional craftsmanship, and a deeply collaborative approach to residential and commercial work. Each year, we offer a limited number of summer internship positions to advanced architecture students who demonstrate strong design sensibility, technical aptitude, and a clear commitment to the profession.

This internship is designed for 4th-year architecture students seeking immersive, real-world experience within a professional studio where design decisions carry through to construction. Interns are integrated into active project teams and trusted with meaningful responsibility from day one.

The Experience
As a Woodhull Summer Architecture Intern, you will engage directly with the architectural process from early conceptual thinking through construction documentation while gaining rare exposure to the realities of building at a high level.

You can expect to:

Document, measure, and 3D scan existing structures as the foundation for thoughtful design

Participate in regulatory and zoning reviews to ensure projects meet local and state requirements

Contribute to the planning, design, and coordination of various residential and commercial projects

Independently apply advanced architectural concepts under the guidance of senior designers and project managers

Collaborate closely with the design team to move projects from schematic design through design development and construction documentation

Work alongside our in-house construction division to develop an understanding of budgets, schedules, and constructability

Participate in a company culture that prioritizes thoughtful service, clear communication, and respect for our clients’ needs.

Support complex or novel design assignments that may require creative problem-solving and the refinement of new techniques

Attend social engagement and networking events with peers

Occasional travel to project sites is part of the experience, typically within an hour of our Portland office.

Who We’re Looking For
This role is best suited for students who are both design-driven and technically curious and who are pursuing architecture as a long-term career, and who are motivated to learn how buildings are actually made, from concept through detailing and construction.

Enrollment in a 4 or 6-year NAAB-accredited Architecture program with at least three years of completed coursework

Full Proficiency in Revit BIM required

Prior exposure to professional practice through internships, studio work, or related experience

Clear intent to pursue architectural licensure

Familiarity with Twinmotion or visualization tools is a plus

Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative studio environment

3.5 GPA or higher

Work Environment and Requirements

In-person role within our Portland office. Remote work is not available

Ability to sit for extended periods and use standard office equipment

Ability to lift and carry up to 10 lbs independently

Where you’ll work
Woodhull’s headquarters is located in the historic Safford House, an Italianate mansion built in 1858 on Portland’s High Street. Acquired and thoughtfully renovated by our own team in 2022, the building reflects Woodhull’s commitment to design excellence, craftsmanship, and respect for architectural history.

The studio balances original character with modern functionality. Restored architectural details such as the grand staircase, arched doors, and intricate wainscoting sit alongside contemporary interventions, including custom walnut millwork, Woodhull-designed furniture, integrated technology, and collaborative workspaces filled with natural light.

This environment is intentionally designed to foster creativity, mentorship, and collaboration. It is a place where design decisions are discussed, tested, and refined in real time, and where interns are fully immersed in the culture and craft of the firm.

Why Woodhull
This is not a passive internship. Interns at Woodhull gain:

Exposure to exceptional design-build projects from concept through construction

Mentorship from experienced architects, designers, and builders

Insight into how high-caliber architecture is realized in the field

An opportunity to build a professional portfolio grounded in real work

For students serious about architecture, this internship offers a rigorous studio experience within a firm where design excellence and craft are inseparable. If you would like to be considered for this opportunity, please submit a cover letter, resume, and portfolio at Woodhullmaine.com/careers.
